raak was founded in 1954 by carel o. lockhorn and is arguable the most important dutch lighting manufacturer of the 20th century. lockhorn had previously worked on the project to illuminate the enormous philips shop in eindhoven, the netherlands. here he would later later open a second raak store).

its now famous tagline ‘illuminated architecture’ enabled them to harmoniously integrate lighting designs with either new or old architecture. starting in the 1960’s, raak would collaborate with artists, architects and designers and had an extensive line up of lights, using high-end materials. two of the many fruitful collaborations were the cylindrical fuga lamp by maija-lissa komulainen and the globe 2000 floor lamp by frank ligtelijn.
