twerdy leuchten is an interesting conundrum. the company was based in stuttgart, germany. not much is known about the company. swedish collector per wendt has found a newspaper ad from twerdy in swedish, c. late 1920’s. several interesting features were incorporated in their design; ”a modern and appealing exterior” coupled with the latest findings in lighting technology. this meant that the glass globes had special glare-free glass while its light was said to be shadowless. in addition, light bulbs with lower light output could be used, making dr. twerdy lamps cheaper to run while maintaining good light output.

since 1927, the marque has been a household name among interior designers and loved in ”all specialist circles, with authorities and in the business world for their aesthetic looks and technological advancements”. the lamps were stamped with the company’s logo in a triangle.

in 1934, alois will took over, and as of today, the company is still in the hands of the third-generation of lighting designers!
in the 1930’s, the light fixtures were also sold in denmark, under the abbreviated name ‘tw’. i wrote about this in an instagram post from february 2026.
